Gábor Tarkövi was born in Esztergom in 1969, descendant of a family of musicians.
At the age of nine, he received his very first trumpet lesson from his father, István Tarkövi. After graduating at the Richter János Conservatory in Győr, Gábor became a student of György Geiger at the Liszt Ferenc Teacher Training College. Gábor continued his studies under Frigyes Varasdy at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.After studying in Budapest, he absorbed important musical influences from György Kurtág and Hans Gansch.
He started his career at the Wurttemberg Philharmonic Orchestra as co-principal trumpet, then moved on to the Berlin Symphonie Orchestra (today Konzerthausorchester Berlin) as principal trumpet, and in 1999 to the Bayern Radio Symphony Orchestra as principal trumpet.
1999 wechselte er in gleicher Position zum Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
Between 2004 – 2019 he was principal trumpet player of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Since 2018 Gábor Tarkövi is Professor for Trumpet at the Berlin University of the Arts.
Gábor Tarkövi plays chamber music in diverse ensembles, in the Pro Brass, the Austrian Brass Connection, the Wien-Berlin Brass Quintet and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Trio. He is a renowned soloist worldwide, presenting concerts with major orchestras as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra, China National Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. Wien-Berlin Brass Quintett, sowie dem Berlin Philharmonic Brass Trio.
Darüber hinaus ist er ein weltweit gefragter Solist und tritt regelmäßig in Europa, den USA und Asien auf. Als Solist spielt er mit namhaften Orchestern, wie den Berliner Philharmonikern, dem Kammerorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, dem China Philharmonic Orchestra, dem New Japan Philharmonic und dem London Symphony Orchestra.
Gábor Tarkövi steht unter Exklusivvertrag bei m Schweizer Label Tudor Classics, wo seine vom Publikum viel beachteten Aufnahmen „Italian Trumpet Concertos“ (mit Mojca Erdmann und dem BR Kammerorchester), “Classical Trumpet Concertos” (mit der Bamberger Symphonikern unter der Leitung von Karl-Heinz Steffens) , „Arioso & Brillante“- Orgel und Trompete (mit Peter Kofler) und „Brillant Brass“ (mit Wien-Berlin Brass Quintett) erschienen sind.
